A comprehensive process lies behind the selection of wines at Somm Premium Wine Experiences, which curates packs of six pinnacle wines that best reflect their region. Each release is also complemented by detail about each region online to provide a complete wine education.
The latest release is a Rhone Valley pack, which comprises a range of wine styles and vintages, spanning from 2017 right back to 2001. As managing director Amos Young says, it’s all about uncovering incredible and hard-to-find wines that represent just how great these regions can be. “Finding true representations of regional wines often requires unearthing carefully cellared wines that are now at the age the winemakers intended them to be enjoyed,” he says. “A lot of the world’s great wine is meant to be cellared, but we want to shortcut that process so people can decide if they want to put more of them in their cellar.”
Subscribers to Somm Premium Wine Experiences receive priority access to each release, and people can also cherry-pick the regions they want to explore. “We want to broaden people’s appreciation and showcase why these regions are so revered,” Amos says.
As for the selection process behind the wines, the online wine retailer’s team visits scores of wineries in each of their chosen iconic wine regions, and they taste each operation’s key wines. The team then chooses the standouts to bring home to Australia and, on return, retastes these 60-odd wines – this time blind – to whittle them down to just six bottles to create the ultimate tasting pack.
