Red Hot and Rated 2018 Guide

Shiraz and Blends

By Halliday Wine Companion

1 Sep, 2018

The most robust varietal category in this year’s Red Hot & Rated guide, with 58 shiraz and shiraz blend examples featured. The number of shiraz included this year, while attesting to the quality of Australian shiraz as all scored more than 95 points, may also speak to the place that shiraz holds in the wine-lovers’ consciousness. Shiraz is, after all, arguably one of the most beloved varietals in Australia.

The selection of shiraz covers a wide range of vintages, blends and regions. Unsurprisingly, the big name wine-producing regions all have a foothold in the guide: Barossa, Coonawarra, Heathcote and Hunter Valley. Among the blends are shiraz pinot and shiraz cabernet. As far as flavour profile, expect characteristics ranging from dark chocolate, black fruits, and plenty of spices.
