Summer reds to try

By Halliday Promotion

When most people think of red wine, they don't usually think of warm weather. However, we've gathered a few wines ideal for sipping at your next summer picnic or barbecue.

Among the wines worth celebrating over the warmer months are reds that are made for summer. Contrary to popular belief, some styles are even tastier once they're chilled, too. Discover these three great reds this season.

Medhurst bottle

2021 Medhurst YRB

Embodying aromatic florals, blue and red fruits, and balanced spices. Its pinot noir component provides red fruit and structure while the shiraz contributes soft, blue fruits, juiciness and charm for an ideal blend. Sip alongside lamb cutlets and grain salads with garden herbs.

Winemaker Simon Steele says: “This is the go-to drink for summer reds as it finishes so clean and fresh, but with delicate flavours that dance across the palate.”

running with bulls

2021 Running with Bulls Garnacha

Encapsulating strawberry leaf, raspberry, mulberry, and violet petal aromas with a hint of fennel, this fresh garnacha is made in the ‘Joven’ style – unoaked and bottled early to ensure it is juicy and lively. The abundance of red and purple berries flows seamlessly through the fine, graphite-like tannins.

Winemaker Sam Wigan says: “This wine is perfect on a warm summer’s afternoon kicking back with good friends. Have the wine slightly chilled (10-15°C) and enjoy with fresh Mexican fare; think nachos with pulled pork or crispy fish tacos with chipotle mayonnaise.”

taylors

2020 Taylors Estate Tempranillo

Expressing flavours of maraschino cherry, plums, this wine has a subtle spice note as well as integrated savoury oak. Medium-bodied with a soft and silky texture to the mid-palate, it has a long, persistent finish. Impress at your next barbecue, pairing well with grilled vegetable kebabs.

Winemaker Mitchell Taylor says: "I love the juiciness that tempranillo typically displays, and our winemakers capture the powerful fruit flavours so well. When served slightly chilled, it’s a stunning wine to enjoy at a summer picnic."

McLaren Vale / Clare Valley, SA | RRP $22 | Drink to 2026 | Find out more.
