Capital Wines started as Kyeema Wines, established by Andrew McEwin in 1986. He purchased a 4ha vineyard 4km south of Murrumbateman in 2000, planted in 1984 to shiraz, cabernet sauvignon and chardonnay (Kyeema had sourced fruit from this vineyard since its first vintage), extending the plantings with merlot, shiraz and tempranillo in ’02, and removing the cabernet in ’07. Kyeema became Capital Wines in ’08, with a much expanded range of wines, including the highly successful Kyeema Vineyard premium range and the Ministry Series. The (now expanded) estate vineyard is still the main source of fruit, supplemented by grape purchases mainly from the Canberra District. The Kyeema vineyard shiraz is an old SA clone, sourced from vineyards used by Penfolds.
