James' Review

Long Rail Gully is operated by the Parker family, established by Barbara and Garry Parker, who began the planting of the 24ha vineyard in 1998. The plantings comprise shiraz (8ha), cabernet sauvignon (4ha), merlot, riesling and pinot gris (3.5ha each) and pinot noir (1.5ha). Winemaker son Richard studied winemaking at CSU, and was responsible for selecting the natural amphitheatre site for the vineyard, designing the layout, and supervising the planting. He also operates a successful contract winemaking business for wineries situated in Orange, Hilltops, Cowra and locally. Exports to China.

About this winery

Long Rail Gully is a boutique winery operation in the Murrumbateman area of the Canberra district.

A little to the north of the village of Murrumbateman in the cool climate wine growing Canberra district sits Long Rail Gully Winery & Cellar Door. The property is part of the original Merryville Stud, which was famous for its merino sheep bloodlines that produced exceptionally high quality fine wool. This original bloodline is still sought after in Australia today locally and internationally. The cool climate and soils made fine wool growing easy. These same conditions are excellent for the production of fine wines.
Garry and Barbra Parker with their wine maker son Richard have transformed Long Rail Gully into an amphitheatre of vines surrounding a beautiful trout filled dam. Long Rail Gully’s first 22 acres of vines were planted in 1998. The vineyard now has 60 acres of vines producing 200 plus tonnes of grapes a year. These vines thrive on the sustenance derived from the ancient decomposing granite soils. The cool Canberra region climate lends itself to creating classic Riesling and Shiraz, Pinot Gris, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir and Merlot.
