Mount Majura Vineyard

New South Wales | Canberra District

Our Review

Vines were first planted in 1988 by Dinny Killen on a site on her family property that had been especially recommended by Dr Edgar Riek; its attractions were red soil of volcanic origin over limestone, with reasonably steep east and northeast slopes providing an element of frost protection. The tiny vineyard has been significantly expanded since it was purchased in ’99. Blocks of pinot noir and chardonnay have been joined by pinot gris, shiraz, tempranillo, riesling, graciano, mondeuse and touriga nacional. Much attention has been focused on tempranillo, with 6 clones planted: D8V12, D8V13, CL770, T306, requena and tinta roriz. Three single-site tempranillos (Rock Block, Dry Spur and Little Dam) are more recent arrivals. The Mount Majura flagship remains the Canberra District Tempranillo, with volume and quality cementing its place. All the grapes used come from these estate plantings. One of the star performers in the Canberra District. -JAMES HALLIDAY

First planted in 1988 on a site selected for its geology, Mount Majura Vineyard is within the ACT and very close to Canberra. The vineyard benefits from an east-facing slope with soil developed on limestone and volcanic rock. All Mount Majura Vineyard wines are sourced only from this single vineyard, and the expression its distinctive character is the focus of viticulture and winemaking. Three decades of experience has seen the development of a unique portfolio of varieties, led by the flagship Tempranillo.
