Semillon and shiraz have been the most consistent performers. Underlying the suitability of these varieties to the Hunter Valley, Briar Ridge has been a model of stability, and has the comfort of substantial estate vineyards from which it is able to select the best grapes. It also has not hesitated to venture into other regions, notably Orange. Alex Beckett has taken over winemaking duties from Gwyn Olsen (Gwyn remains as a consultant). Exports to the UK, Europe and Canada.
Nestled amongst the rolling hills of Mount View in the Hunter Valley, Briar Ridge is an iconic vineyard who, for almost 50 years, has been producing both the quintessential Hunter classics and small-batch modern styles. Enjoying a microclimate slightly different to other areas of the Hunter Valley adds to Briar Ridge’s uniqueness; producing fruit of incredible intensity and distinctive character. Renowned for many accolades, most recently for their 2018 Dairy Hill Semillon, which garnered them the 2020 New South Wales Wine Show ‘Governor’s Best Wine in Show’ award, Briar Ridge’s winemaking is led by Winemaker, Alex Beckett. A Hunter Valley local, Alex began his career with Briar Ridge as Assistant Winemaker; however, his passion, education and tenacity soon saw him become Winemaker. Alex is responsible for Briar Ridge’s unique selection of both classic and alternate varieties, drawing from plots in Orange, Hunter Valley (NSW) and Wrattonbully (SA); making for a very well-balanced portfolio.
