Owners David and Elisabeth Capel’s love of wine and a rural life led them to the purchase of their 11ha property in 2001 at which time the land (previously used for livestock) was mainly cleared, with small patches of remnant vegetation. It wasn’t until ’08 that they undertook major soil improvements, installed all of the vineyard infrastructure and personally planted 2.2ha of semillon and shiraz under the direction of viticulturist Jenny Bright. They say, ‘We are very fortunate to have the support (and muscle) of our close friends and family who put in an amazing effort every vintage and help us to hand-pick every single shiraz and semillon grape that we grow’. It precisely follows the early years (1971–77) of Brokenwood.
deCapel Wines is a boutique, family-run vineyard producing Hunter Valley classic varieties - Semillon, Shiraz and Chardonnay, along with a regional Rosé. Originally hand planted in 2008, we are now enjoying over a decade of making excellent, single variety wines. Every vintage, we hand pick our grapes with a team of family and friends ensuring the best possible quality and integrity of fruit.
