Leogate Estate Wines

New South Wales | Hunter Valley

James' Review

Since purchasing the substantial Brokenback Vineyard in 2009 (a key part of the original Rothbury Estate, with the majority of vines over 50 years old), Bill and Vicki Widin have wasted no time. Initially the Widins leased the Tempus Two winery but prior to the '13 vintage they completed the construction of their own winery and cellar door. They have also expanded the range of varieties, supplementing the long-established 30ha of shiraz, 25ha of chardonnay and 3ha of semillon with between 0.5 and 2ha of each of verdelho, viognier, gewurztraminer, pinot gris and tempranillo. They have had a string of wine show successes for their very impressive portfolio. In '16 Leogate purchased a 61ha certified organic vineyard at Gulgong (Mudgee) planted to shiraz, cabernet sauvignon and merlot. Leogate has an impressive collection of back-vintage releases available on request. Exports to the UK, the US, Malaysia, Hong Kong and China.

About

In 2009 Leogate Estate leased the former Tempus Two Winery (which was itself established in 2004/5) from the Roche Family and, having also purchased all of the installed winery plant and equipment, commenced winemaking there at harvest in 2010.

Construction of the new winery building on Brokenback Vineyard was completed in 2012, and the former Tempus Two Winery plant and equipment was then dismantled and reassembled within the new building. Our first harvest to be processed within the new winery was 2013. In 2014 the new winery processed some 340 tonnes of grapes (including 100 tonnes of contract customers’ grapes), but has a capacity to process in excess of 500 tonnes of grapes.

The two sets of cast-iron front gates to Brokenback Vineyard carry a lion rampant. Hence the name, logo, and wine label “Leogate Estate”.

The current vineyard has 50 hectares under vine, comprising chardonnay (18.1ha), and semillon (3.9ha) on the flat gravelled soils and shiraz (28ha) on the eastern and western-facing slopes of the adjacent rise as well as verdelho (2.5ha) and tempranillo (1ha) which were planted in 2009.
