Our Review
Pokolbin Estate has a very unusual, but very good, multi-varietal, multi-vintage array of wines always available for sale. The Riesling is true riesling, not misnamed semillon, the latter being one of their best wines, and wines under screwcap going back 6 or 7 vintages, and single-vineyard offerings to boot, are available. -JAMES HALLIDAY
About
A scotsman by the name of Allan originally built this Australian cottage in 1889 on a property adjoining the Hunter Valleys first vineyard planted by James Busby in 1831. The old "Kirktin" vineyard at lower belford.
The MacDougall family owners of pokolbin estate were anxious to preserve such an historic part of the Hunters heritage. In 1978 they purchased the cottage and moved it to its present site.
It is perhaps appropriate that a significant aspect of the Hunter early settlement is now located in the midst of Australia's Premium Wine growing areas - the Pokolbin district in the Hunter Valley. The Winery was offically opened as MacDougall Pokolbin Estate in March 1980.
