Our Review
Angus Vinden may be young in the context of regional winemakers, but he lacks neither moxie nor experience. A 2nd-generation farmer with 22ha under vine, Angus’ deft touch is due as much to his regional nous as to the mentorship of Glen Howard and the influence of his backyard sites. A traditional suite of semillon and shiraz galvanises the crowd at the Vinden cellar door, but for those seeking intrigue there are exciting tremors beyond. With the use of amphorae, long macerations and whole-bunch fermentations across varieties that augur well for the future, the atmosphere at Vinden is one of febrile excitement, strung across a bow of great possibility and high expectations. The tempranillos are possibly the finest in the country. Full and plump, but savoury and marked by a detailed tannic mettle and Hunter earthiness. The chenin, electrifying. Stay tuned! Exports to the UK, the US and Singapore. -NED GOODWIN MW
