While three generations of the family have been involved since Robert (Bob) Stein began the establishment of the vineyard, the chain stretches even further back, going to Bob's great-great-grandfather, Johann Stein, who was brought to Australia in 1838 by the Macarthur family to supervise the planting of the Camden Park Vineyard. Bob's son Drew and grandson Jacob have now taken over winemaking responsibilities. Jacob has worked vintages in Italy, Canada, Margaret River and Avoca, and, more particularly, in the Rheingau and Rheinhessen regions of Germany. Since his return one success has followed another. Exports to Germany, Hong Kong, Singapore and China.

About

Johann Stein arrived in Australia in 1838 bringing with him select Riesling cuttings (the frist cuttings to survive in Australia) and viticultural expertise to supervise operations at Macarthurs Camden vineyards. Many Generations later, Robert and Lorna Stein established Steins Wines in 1976 on 25 acres of prime viticulture land in Mudgee. The vineyard and winery is now in the hands of second Generation Andrew Stein, and Third Generation Winemaker, Jacob. The vines now approaching 40 years old, are producing some of Mudgees most awarded wines.

Situated in the grounds of the Robert Stein Winery, the Pipeclay Pumphouse Restaurant is one of Mudgee’s premier fine dining restaurants. Views overlooking the vineyard, farm and valley give the restaurant a relaxed atmosphere. The seasonal menus pay homage to the land surrounding the restaurant and the produce that it provides, accentuating the freshness and quality behind a paddock to plate philosophy. Due to the popularity of the Pipeclay Pumphouse Restaurant with both locals and visitors from out of town it is advisable to book in advance.

Menus are designed and created to pay homage to the surrounding land and the produce that it provides. Simple techniques are used to accentuate the freshness of the produce.
