The inspiration behind the name is clear when you find that owners Bill Shrapnel and his wife Jane have long loved the wines of Alsace: Colmar is the main town in that region. The Shrapnels realised a long-held ambition when they purchased an established, high-altitude (980m) vineyard in May 2013. Everything they have done has turned to gold: notably grafting cabernet sauvignon to pinot noir, merlot to chardonnay, and shiraz to pinot gris. The plantings are now 1.51ha of pinot noir (clones 777, 115 and MV6), 1.25ha of chardonnay (clones 95, 96 and P58), 1.24ha of riesling and lesser quantities of sauvignon blanc, pinot gris and traminer.
Colmar Estate produces premium wines from hand-picked fruit grown exclusively on the estate at an elevation of 980 metres. The high altitude and associated cool climate ensure fine, elegant wines with pure varietal expression. Colmar Estate won the Trophy for Best Exhibitor at the Orange Wine Show in both 2018 and 2019, the 2018 Colmar Estate Block 1 Pinot Noir winning the Best Wine of Show Trophy.
