Coppabella of Tumbarumba

New South Wales | Tumbarumba

Our Review

Coppabella is owned by Jason and Alecia Brown, owners of the highly successful Moppity Vineyards in Hilltops. They became aware of the quality of Tumbarumba chardonnay and pinot noir, in particular the quality of the grapes from the 71ha Coppabella vineyard, when purchasing grapes for Moppity Vineyards. This was the 2nd vineyard established (in 1993) by the region’s founder, Ian Cowell, but frost and other problems led him to lease the vineyard to Southcorp until 2007. The reversion of the management of the vineyard coincided with several failed vintages, and the owner decided to close the vineyard and remove the vines. In October ’11, at the last moment, the Browns purchased the vineyard and have since invested heavily in it, rehabilitating the vines and grafting a number of blocks to the earlier ripening Dijon clones of pinot noir and chardonnay. Coppabella is run as an entirely separate venture from Moppity.

Set in the foothills of the Snowy Mountains, Tumbarumba is one of the coldest viticulture regions on mainland Australia. It’s not an easy place to grow grapes – Winter is bitterly cold; Spring can be punctuated by severe frosts and the terrain is frighteningly steep. But it is in this unique climate that we can create wines of purity, expression and elegance that speak of their origin.
There are few places in Australia cool enough to craft world class wines from early ripening varieties such as Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. That this can be achieved in Southern NSW is among the most exciting stories in Australian wine making – and it is what drew Jason & Alecia Brown to purchase the vineyard in 2011.
Under the Brown’s ownership the entire vineyard has been transformed, they have invested heavily; rehabilitating vines, overhauling viticulture practices, planting new varieties and experimenting with sustainable farming methods. But most importantly, rather than just grow grapes to sell to other wineries, all of the vineyard’s fruit (including what was once reserved for Penfolds Yattarna) is now made into wine under the Coppabella label.

Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier, Sauvignon Blanc, Gruner Veltliner and Prosecco
