It is years since the Chain of Ponds brand was separated from its then 200ha of estate vineyards, which were among the largest in the Adelaide Hills. It does, however, have long-term contracts with major growers. Prior to the 2015 vintage, Greg Clack came onboard as full-time chief winemaker. In May ’16 Chain of Ponds closed its cellar door and moved to Project Wine’s small-batch processing facility at Langhorne Creek, where it also sources fruit for its budget range. Exports to the UK, the US, Canada, Singapore, Hong Kong, the Philippines, Japan and China.
Chain of Ponds was established in 1985 on the outskirts of Gumeracha, approximately 4km from the original Chain of Ponds township which was razed in the early 1970's and from which it is named. Four thousand vines were initially planted covering 9 varieties, consisting of 470 vines of each variety. This was further increased with an additional 150 acres planted in 1989. The first vintage was 1988. The winery was sold in 2004 to the present owners who now source fruit from a much broader area of the region, which has added further complexities and subtleties to the wines themselves. The winery produces a diverse range of products from the Adelaide Hills, concentrating on varieties that thrive in this cool climate region.
