A beautifully located vineyard and winery at 1000m on a ridge overlooking the Ballandean township and the Severn River Valley. The granite boulder-strewn hills mean that the 70ha property only provides 2ha of vineyard, in turn divided into three blocks planted to shiraz and merlot. Other varieties are sourced from local growers. The business is owned by a group of Brisbane wine enthusiasts.
Hidden Creek is situated in the beautiful rugged high altitude hills of Queensland’s Granite Belt at over 900 metres above sea level which is unique in Queensland.
Roughly 225 million years ago, powerful acts of nature created the foundations for our dramatic landscape. Major earth movements rocked eastern Australia between 200 and 400 million years ago. The continent collided with an oceanic plate and ocean sediments were thrust from off-shore into the area south of the Granite Belt. This ancient sediment is known as traprock or bedrock. From the depths of the earth, hot molten rock called magma was forced upwards and invaded the traprock layer. Cooling slowly, the liquid magma solidified to form granite. Over millions of years, nature’s forces combined to erode the traprock, revealing the bare granite below.
The Granite Belt has warm summers and bitterly cold winters. This climate, together with the arid granite rocky soils, draws similar comparisons to high regions close to the Mediterranean. Areas such as north-eastern Spain, the inland south-west of France around Cahors and Gaillac, and the upper Rhone Valley in France, bear a great resemblance to our Granite Belt terrain. These regions have a tradition of unique characterful wines that are wonderful accompaniments to food.
Our knowledgeable cellar door staff will guide you through an appreciation of Hidden Creek wines ranging from elegant whites, serious reds and the ever-popular and refreshing pink moscato. This range of wines also includes some alternative varieties such as Tempranillo Verdelho and Viognier which we call our 'Strangebirds'. Our cellar door features silky-oak panelling and ornate leadlights originating from the old Ipswich Baptist church, and during winter our blazing fireplace will keep you warm.
