Deviation Road

South Australia | Adelaide Hills

James' Review

Deviation Road was created in 1998 by Hamish Laurie, great-great-grandson of Mary Laurie, SA's first female winemaker. He initially joined with father Dr Chris Laurie in '92 to help build the Hillstowe Wines business; the brand was sold in 2001, but the Laurie family retained the vineyard, which now supplies Deviation Road with its grapes. Wife Kate joined the business in '01, having studied winemaking and viticulture in Champagne, then spent four years at her family's Stone Bridge winery in Manjimup. It also has 3ha of pinot noir and shiraz at Longwood, where its cellar door is situated. Exports to the UK, the US and Hong Kong.

Deviation Road produces exciting cool climate wines from mature vineyard resources in the Adelaide Hills, South Australia. Owners Hamish and Kate Laurie continue a five generation winemaking tradition. Devoted to the high altitude sites of the Adelaide Hills and with Kate’s French oenology training, the wines they produce are at once traditional and contemporary. With a fiery passion to create premium bottle fermented and aged sparkling together with textural aromatic whites that can genuinely cellar, their signature style is focused, textural, restrained and balanced.
