Mordrelle Wines

South Australia | Adelaide Hills

Our Review

Based in Hahndorf in the beautiful Adelaide Hills, Mordrelle Wines is owned by Martin Moran – who holds a PhD in viticulture and oenology – his wife Michelle and her family, David and Jane Dreckow. The Mordrelle portfolio primarily sources fruit from growers, with long-standing relationships the key. The certified-organic Manyara vineyard in Balhannah supplies chardonnay and pinot for still wines, while grüner veltliner and sauvignon blanc come from Springhill vineyard in Macclesfield. Langhorne Creek grenache is increasing interest – Martin has previously worked on viticulture research projects in the region and (tapping into his Argentinian roots) has made malbec from there as well as a regional trophy-winning barbera and other varieties. A special focus has been bottle-fermented blanc de blancs with extended time on lees from 5 to 10 years. Mordrelle’s labels are created from original artworks painted by Jose Luis Moran, Martin’s late father. -JAMES HALLIDAY
