Protero

Stephen and Fiona Pannell first discovered the nebbiolo growing outside Gumeracha in the northern Adelaide Hills in '04 – it had been planted by Rose and Frank Baldasso in '99. The vineyard, on a western-facing slope, is home to 5 clones of nebbiolo that Stephen has worked with since '05. Surrounded by native bush, twice in 20 years the vineyard has been surrounded by fire and twice it has survived (including a week after the Pannells bought the property in Dec '19). They have since removed chardonnay, pinot noir, merlot and viognier from the vineyard and planted barbera, dolcetto, gewürztraminer, pinot gris and riesling. Nebbiolo remains a passion. -TONY LOVE
