Our Review

Stephen and Fiona Pannell first discovered the nebbiolo growing outside Gumeracha in the northern Adelaide Hills in 2004 – it had been planted by Rose and Frank Baldasso in 1999. The vineyard, on a western-facing slope, is home to five clones of nebbiolo that Stephen has worked with since 2005. Surrounded by native bush, twice in 20 years the vineyard has been surrounded by fire and twice it has survived (including a week after the Pannells bought the property in December 2019). They have since removed chardonnay, pinot noir, merlot and viognier from the vineyard and planted barbera, dolcetto, gewürztraminer, pinot gris and riesling. Nebbiolo remains a passion, but Stephen poses the questions each year: what is Australian nebbiolo? How does it translate? ‘We shouldn’t attempt to replicate the wines of Piedmont, but rather create a unique style of nebbiolo that speaks of our place.’ (TL)
