Yelland and Papps

South Australia | Barossa Valley

James' Review

Michael and Susan Papps (nee Yelland) set up this venture after their marriage in 2005. It is easy for them to regard the Barossa Valley as their home, for Michael has lived and worked in the wine industry in the Barossa Valley for more than 20 years. He has a rare touch, with his wines consistently excellent, but also pushing the envelope; as well as using a sustainable approach to winemaking with minimal inputs, he has not hesitated to challenge orthodox approaches to a number of aspects of conventional fermentation methods.

The Yelland and Papps story perhaps doesn’t fit in with the usual line spun by wineries in the Barossa - six generations of this, five generations of that. It is a story about new beginnings, a story about a young couple, with a young family, forging their own path within a wine region as first generation winegrowers. While not locals....there is a saying in the Barossa that you have to have a grand-parent “in the ground” before you are considered a local.....Susan Yelland and Michael Papps call the Barossa home and are as passionate as any sixth-generation Barossan about the region, its vines and its history and its characters.
