Local Clare families Rob and Mandy Knight and Peter and Robyn Shearer own two vineyards, one to the north, the other to the south of Clare. The vineyards were first planted in 1974, and are dry-grown and hand-pruned. In all there are shiraz, riesling, cabernet sauvignon and chardonnay. Wykari is an indigenous word meaning windy hill.
The Wykari Wine Story
After 6 years of hard work planting, pruning, picking and crushing grapes in the Clare Valley, the Wykari Wine label was launched in March 2008 through a partnership between two local Clare families – Rob and Mandy Knight and Peter and Robyn Shearer. Wykari is of Aboriginal origin – meaning Windy Hill. The name refers to our oldest vineyard located high up in the hills on the southern fringe of the Clare township at an elevation of 450 metres above sea level. Our wines are exclusively made by local wine making legend, Neil Paulett, from fruit that was first planted in our 50 acre vineyards in 1974. In a short time, our wines have won numerous awards and accolades throughout Australia. James Halliday, Australia’s most notable wine critic, has consistently awarded our wines 90+ points (94pts awarded in the 2015 Wine Guide) over the past 5 years. He has also awarded our winery 4 ½ stars out of 5 for the past 3 years, a rating reserved for only the highest quality wine producers. Our wine represents exceptional value and it is our objective to provide lovers of fine wine with an affordable, premium product that can be enjoyed on any occasion. Wykari Wines are not sold in bottle shops and are only available through cellar door, online, mail order or fine restaurants, pubs and clubs throughout Australia. We hope you enjoy them as much as we do, regards Rob and Pete, Mandy and Robyn.
