South Australia | McLaren Vale

James' Review

This brings together two high-performance, highly experienced and highly credentialled business and life partners. Toby Bekkers graduated with an honours degree in applied science in agriculture from the University of Adelaide, and over the ensuing years has had broad-ranging responsibilities as general manager of Paxton Wines in McLaren Vale, and as a leading exponent of organic and biodynamic viticulture. Emmanuelle was born in Bandol in the south of France, and gained two university degrees, in biochemistry and oenology, before working for the Hardys in the south of France, which led her to Australia and a wide-ranging career, including Chalk Hill. Exports to the UK, Canada, France and China.

Painted on the stunning backdrop of the McLaren Vale, with its sweeping vineyard and ocean views, the BEKKERS WINE canvas is illustrated from a rare connection with nature and a world of experience. In the beginning, it was a chance meeting at one of the oldest wineries in the region that set the scene, and then the wheels in motion, for a young French winemaker and a newly graduated viticulturist to begin the Bekkers Wine story. Since that fateful collision of talent and passion, Toby and Emmanuelle have lived, worked and raised a family amongst the vineyards of McLaren Vale, South Australia. BEKKERS WINE is the resulting chapter. At the heart of the Bekkers Wine tale is their philosophy. A philosophy of complimentary and contrasting styles and favourably matched expertise. Exceptional attention to detail is exercised in the vineyard. This is the showcase for Toby’s viticultural abilities and subscribes to a philosophy of farming which views the vineyard through a prism of ecology, not chemistry. It extends equally to the cellar where Emmanuelle’s precision is the perfect foil to Toby’s unfettered, open-minded approach to winemaking. Patience and gentle practices bring to life wines that not only possess the generosity for which McLaren Vale is renowned, but more importantly a refined texture, fragrance and a sense of restraint. With skill, their wines are gently crafted in tiny quantities, with an accent on finesse and fine texture. In every step of the winemaking process they strive to be an emblem for the region, which dominates their label, and to push the limits of what’s possible for the McLaren Vale and Australian wine. Most importantly they intend for their wines to partner with good food and fine company and to celebrate those significant moments in the lives of their customers.
