Five Geese

South Australia | McLaren Vale

Our Review

Sue Trott is devoted to her Five Geese wines, which come from vines planted in 1927 and '65 (shiraz, cabernet sauvignon, grenache and mataro), nero d'Avola a more recent arrival. She sold the grapes for many years, but in '99 decided to create her own label and make a strictly limited amount of wine from the pick of the vineyards, which are run on organic principles. Exports to the UK, Korea, Singapore and China.

Five Geese is a small McLaren Vale winery that specializes in red wine; Grenache, Shiraz, a Cabernet Sauvignon and Nero d'Avalo. The company’s underlying philosophy is to promote itself by producing premium wines that are recognised as excellent value for money. Nestled in Blewitt Springs at the north-eastern end of the McLaren Vale valley, the Five Geese vineyard lies about 180m above sea level. This slightly higher elevation provides a cooler climate than nearby McLaren Vale and Willunga, providing a long, even ripening season for our fruit. The soils are sandy with heavy clay and iron-stone beneath. Only surface water, collected in dams, is used for minimal irrigation. Their Grenache block was planted in 1957 and is dry-grown and hand-picked. They take their name from the five geese that live on the vineyard. They may greet you as you pass the vineyards with a hiss and a honk!

They specialize in making what McLaren Vale is famous for; red wines. We make Shiraz, Grenache, and Cabernet Sauvignon in the five geese range and in the best of years a Reserve Range is released.

Their wines provide excellent quality year-in and year-out , for the discerning drinker to the wine connoisseur, looking to age something exceptional for that special occasion.
