Inkwell was born in 2003 when Dudley Brown returned to Australia from California and bought a rundown vineyard on the serendipitously named California Road. He inherited 5ha of neglected shiraz, and planted an additional 7ha to viognier (2.5ha), zinfandel (2.5ha) and heritage shiraz clones (2ha). The five-year restoration of the old vines and establishment of the new reads like the ultimate handbook for aspiring vignerons, particularly those who are prepared to work non-stop. The reward has been rich. Dudley is adamant that the production will be capped at 1000 dozen; almost all the grapes are sold. Exports to the US and Canada.
Inkwell produces small batch single vineyard wines from low yielding Shiraz, Primitivo, Cabernet Sauvignon and Viognier vines in McLaren Vale. Our vineyards are sustainably / biologically farmed with an emphasis on expressing the unique values of our special site. Planted in thin loam over on 1-2 million year old Ngaltinga and Pirramimma Sandstone formations.
