Three Dark Horses

South Australia | McLaren Vale

Our Review

Three Dark Horses is the project of former Coriole winemaker Matt Broomhead. After vintages in southern Italy and the Rhône Valley, he returned to McLaren Vale in late '09 and, with his father Alan, buys quality grapes, thanks to the many years of experience they both have in the region. The 3rd dark horse was Matt’s grandfather, who has now sadly passed away. Shiraz, cabernet, touriga nacional and grenache are planted and the shiraz vines planted in ’64 have been successfully reworked. Part of the vineyard is sand soil–based interspersed with ironstone, a highly desirable mix for shiraz and cabernet sauvignon. -JAMES HALLIDAY
