Giles Cooke and Fergal Tynan are based in Scotland, and have a collective 40+ years' experience in buying and selling Australian wines. They have been friends since 1998, when they met over a pint of beer on the evening before the first Master of Wine course they were about to embark on. In 2006 they established Alliance Wine Australia, which purchases Australian wines for distribution in the UK; they took the process one step further when Alliance began the Thistledown Wines venture. This focuses on Barossa Valley shiraz, McLaren Vale grenache, and smaller amounts of chardonnay from the Adelaide Hills. The wines are made under Peter Leske's direction at his Revenir small batch winery in the Adelaide Hills. Giles says he has particular affection for grenache, and is precisely right (in my view) when he says, ‘McLaren Vale grenache is world class, and it best expresses itself when made in the mould of pinot noir.' Exports to the UK, the US, Canada, Ireland, The Netherlands, Denmark, Czech Republic, Poland, Malta, South Korea, Singapore, China and NZ.
Thistledown is a collaboration between Giles Cooke MW, Fergal Tynan MW and renowned winemaker Peter Leske. Drawing on their combined knowledge, they hunt down parcels of fruit in the premium growing regions of South Australia to make wines of subtlety, energy and texture.
