Alex Russell’s story brings back memories of Steve and Monique Lubiana’s 1990 move from the family winery in the Riverland to Tasmania’s Derwent River to make high quality sparkling wine. Alex studied viticulture at La Trobe Bundoora. After finishing that degree he moved to Mildura to take on a technical role. He then enrolled in wine science at Charles Sturt University, made wine at Zilzie (2008) and then at Angove Family Winemakers, where he was introduced to the Riverland Vine Improvement Committee (RVIC). He volunteered as experimental winemaker for RVIC and was exposed to everything from albarino to zinfandel, while still working for Angove. After establishing RVIC’s Cirami Estate brand he moved on in ’14 to establish his own winery in a leased shed in Renmark, making 17 different varietal wines. That business continues notwithstanding his move to Tasmania, simply because the Riverland vintage is largely finished before that of Tasmania starts. Exports to the EU, the US, the UK and NZ.
