Pooley Wines

Tasmania | Tasmania

Our Review

Pooley Wines is a glowing exemplar of a boutique Tasmanian family estate. Three generations of the family have been involved in its development, with the little hands of the 4th generation now starting to get involved. The heart of production has historically been the glorious Campania vineyard of Cooinda Vale (after which the brand was originally named), planted to 12ha of chardonnay, pinot noir, riesling and pinot grigio, with new plantings currently underway. In '03, the family planted pinot noir and pinot grigio (and more recently chardonnay, riesling and syrah, bringing plantings to 6ha) at Belmont vineyard near Richmond, renamed Butcher’s Hill. A cellar door was established in the heritage-listed sandstone barn and coach house of the distinguished 1830s convict-built Georgian home, standing in pride of place on the heritage property. Wine quality has risen to dramatic effect, no small feat while doubling production, since the return to Tasmania of Anna Pooley and husband Justin Bubb to establish the winemaking arm of the estate in '12. Pooley's riesling, pinot noir and chardonnay now rank among Tasmania’s finest. -TYSON STELZER
