James' Review

Keppell Smith embarked on a career in wine in 1996, studying winemaking at CSU and (at a practical level) with Phillip Jones at Bass Phillip. He purchased the 40ha property on which Savaterre has been established, and has close-planted (7500 vines per hectare) 1ha each of chardonnay and pinot noir at an elevation of 440m. Organic principles govern the viticulture, and the winemaking techniques look to the Old World rather than the New. Smith's stated aim is to produce outstanding individualistic wines far removed from the mainstream.
