In 2016, Raquel and Hugh Jones discovered a vineyard 10min out of Beechworth, neighbouring the likes of Giaconda and Castagna. It had an immaculate 20yo of shiraz, planted in '98, with fruit sold to Yalumba (for a single-vineyard shiraz) as well as to smaller producers. Raquel and Hugh retained some of the shiraz and have since added tempranillo, albariño, grenache and monastrell, a nod to Raquel’s Spanish heritage. Biological farming and soil health is a priority for them and the preference is for traditional, low-intervention winemaking, including the use of amphora. -JAMES HALLIDAY

It's personal at Weathercraft: the winemaking is hands-on, made by one maker, and the wine-tasting experience is similarly exclusive. Visit the purpose-built cellar door here, just outside Beechworth, and you will be met by winemaker Raquel Jones, to be guided through a taste of her amazing products, which range from shiraz to tempranillo to chardonnay and pinot gris. There are several of these personal experiences to choose from, from a straightforward tasting with Raquel to a barrel room experience that takes in a tour of the winery and a taste of some of the new Weathercraft wines straight from the barrel.
