Blue Gables is the culmination of a long-held dream for chemical engineer Alistair and journalist wife Catherine Hicks. They purchased 8ha of a north-facing hillside slope from Catherine's father's dairy farm and built a two-storey gabled roof farmhouse, hence the name. This small vineyard, nestled high above the Macalister Irrigation District in East Gippsland, was established in 2004 with the planting of the first vines, and continued in '05 with 0.8ha each of sauvignon blanc, pinot gris and shiraz and 0.4ha of chardonnay. The wines have had significant success in the Gippsland and Victorian Wine Shows.
Alistair Hicks (Chemical Engineer) and his wife Catherine were looking for a lifestyle change. They planted 7 acres under vine after subdividing land from Catherine’s fathers dairy farm in 2004. The now established boutique vineyard has 2 acres of Shiraz, 2 acres of Pinot Gris, 2 acres of Sauvignon Blanc and 1 acre of Chardonnay. The vineyard is expanding with plantings of Sangiovese and Pinot Noir in the spring of 2017.
Vines are planted under drip irrigation. The site is considered warm for Gippsland with no maritime influence. The elevated sight is exposed to prevailing winds off Lake Glenmaggie which increase water demand in late summer.
Our first vintage was 2009, with wines initially made by Mal Stewart, who continues to make our sparkling wines.
Our new winemaker Alastair Butt has set a high benchmark for us with his first 2 vintages, commencing 2015. The 2016 Pinot Gris won Gold & Best aromatic dry white at Gippsland wine show. Both the 2016 Pinot Gris and Sauvignon Blanc also made the 2016 VIC100 awards.
We have a very busy Cellar Door, open all year round on Sat & Sun, where people come to enjoy our wines paired with our Wood Fired Pizzas amidst magnificent views of the Macalister Irrigation District.
