Ulupna started out as a retirement activity for Nick and Kathy Bogdan. The vineyard on the banks of the Murray River is planted to shiraz (50%), cabernet sauvignon (30%) and chardonnay (20%), the plantings allowing for expansion in the years ahead. The wines are made under the direction of Vio Buga, who also designed and planted the vineyard. Exports are primarily directed to China, followed by Hong Kong, Korea and Singapore.
Established in 1999, Ulupna Winery is a 22ha vineyard, located in the Victorian Goulburn Valley. Flourishing next to Australia’s longest river, the winery is nestled among Red Pepper Trees and majestic Red Gums which lend the vineyard its mineral-rich alluvial soils and distinctive climate. Ulupna Winery is a family run business, owned by Kathy and Nicholas who had intended the winery to be retirement activity. Kathy’s daughter, Viviana saw the great opportunity of the vineyard and alongside Kathy, proceeded to create a lasting legacy for the family and two daughters. ‘Ulupna’ was the historical name of the wider region in which the vineyard, winery and cellar door are located. The name was chosen to acknowledge the ancestry of the land, and additionally identifies the local Aboriginal clan of the Yorta Yorta tribe. ‘Ulupna’ translates as strong women.
