Stanton & Killeen Wines

Victoria | Rutherglen

James' Review

In 2020 Stanton & Killeen will celebrate its 145th anniversary. The business is owned and run by seventh-generation vigneron Natasha Killeen, and her mother and CEO, Wendy Killeen. Fortifieds are a strong focus for the winery, with around half of its production dedicated to this style. Their vineyards comprise 14 varieties, including seven Portuguese cultivars used for both fortified and table wine production - with two additional Portuguese varieties planned for future planting. A vineyard rejuvenation program has been implemented since 2014, focusing on sustainable and environmentally friendly practices. Exports to the UK, Switzerland, Taiwan, Hong Kong and China.

About

Stanton & Killeen is one of Australia’s oldest family-owned wineries with a strong reputation for blending the old with the new. The team at Stanton & Killeen continue the legacy of producing award winning barrel-aged fortifieds and vintage fortifieds as well as having fun with 14 different grape varieties, of which half are Portuguese. The cellar door in Rutherglen offers an exciting mix of rare and unusual wines including sparkling tempranillo, arinto and alvarinho and old favourites such as shiraz, durif, muscat and topaque.

Chris Killeen, the late sixth-generation winemaker, was best known for his passion and skill in creating vintage fortifieds. His unique style combined shiraz and durif with several Portuguese grapes varieties that he planted in the 1990s. These vineyards, plus more emerging varieties recently planted, are now being used across a range of wines styles. One of Stanton & Killeen’s signature red wines, ‘The Prince’, is made in honour of Chris and each year is a unique blend of the best parcels of fruit from varieties including touriga nacional, tinta barroca, tinto cão and souzão.

As a Five Red Star winery, a visit to the cellar door will offer many surprises and chances to discover new wines. Enjoy a full muscat or topaque fortified classification, sampling wines from the young and fresh ‘Rutherglen’ tier through to the more developed ‘Classic’ and ‘Grand’, finishing with a taste of the luscious and many-decades old ‘Rare’ blend. Or simply enjoy a glass of sparkling shiraz or Portuguese blend rosé on their lush lawns with a regional picnic hamper.
