Fowles Wine

Victoria | Strathbogie Ranges

Our Review

This family-owned winery is led by Matt Fowles, with chief winemaker Victor Nash heading the winemaking team. The large vineyard is primarily focused on riesling, chardonnay, shiraz and cabernet sauvignon, but also includes arneis, vermentino, pinot gris, sauvignon blanc, pinot noir, mourvedre, sangiovese and merlot. Marketing is energetic, with the well known Ladies who Shoot their Lunch label also available presented in a 6-bottle gun case. Exports to the UK, the US, Canada and China.

About

Fowles Wine family owned vineyards and winery are located in the high-altitude region of the Strathbogie Ranges, located 90 minutes northeast of Melbourne. Led by Matt Fowles, a former lawyer who swapped the vitriol for the vineyard, Fowles Wine craft some of Australia’s finest cool climate wines. Set in the foothills of the Great Dividing Range at elevations between 430 and 550 metres above sea level, the family’s two vineyards - Upton Run and Billi’s, rest upon the free draining, granite soil from giant, ancient granite boulders. Each block has unique aspects and microclimates which ensures each bottle of Fowles’ Wine is complex and distinctive. The Fowles’ rich family history of vignerons, hunters and farmers is embedded in the winemaking philosophy. These pillars guide the winemaking team in producing distinct wines that reflect Strathbogie provenance and capture the granite terroir of the region, and wines that pair with the flavours of wild produce and complement the soft textures of farm raised meats. White wines are light and fresh and develop great fruit intensity and minerality and red wines are highly perfumed, intensely coloured and powerful, yet restrained and elegant.
