Philip (a chef and hotelier) and Christine Challen began the establishment of their vineyard in 1986 with the planting of 0.5ha of cabernet sauvignon. Several years later, 2ha of chardonnay (and a few vines of pinot noir) followed. Vineyard practice and soil management are based on organic principles; there are low yields, notwithstanding the age of the vines.
In the secluded Little River Valley in Taggerty, below the majestic Cathedral Range, Philip and Christine Challen established a cool climate vineyard in 1986 comprising Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Cabernet Sauvignon. In 2001, following many years in the hospitality industry, they put their extensive knowledge of the market into practice to craft low volume still and sparkling wines grown according to permacultural and organic principles. Subsequently, they have acquired the neighbouring Taggerty Estate vineyard, also abutting the Little River, comprising Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Following the fires of 2009, they have sourced small select parcels of premium fruit from throughout Central Victoria, all in all producing elegant wines demonstrating varietal style and regional characteristics.
