Mandala is owned by Charles Smedley, who acquired the established vineyard in 2007. The vineyard has vines up to 25 years old, but the spectacular restaurant and cellar door complex is a more recent addition. The vineyards are primarily at the home base in Dixons Creek, with chardonnay (9.1ha), pinot noir (6.1ha), cabernet sauvignon (4.4ha), sauvignon blanc (2.9ha), shiraz (1.7ha) and merlot (0.4ha). There is a separate 4.4ha vineyard at Yarra Junction planted entirely to pinot noir with an impressive clonal mix. Exports to China.
Located in the picturesque Yarra Valley, Mandala proudly crafts wines of character and finesse, designed to be enjoyed with good food and great company.
Beginning with Yarra Junction Estate in 1999 and growing to include a second vineyard and become Mandala Wines in 2006, the Smedley family now has two separate Yarra Valley sites under vine. Both produce varietals that excel in the region; the Dixons Creek site is home to a mix of classic varietals, while the Yarra Junction vineyard was carefully selected for premium pinot noir production.
The 10 acre Yarra Junction vineyard was planted to four Burgundian pinot noir clones in 1999. With clay-loam volcanic mix soil and the characteristic warm days and cool nights of the Upper Yarra, the site is ideal for pinot noir and produced Mandala's first Single-Site wine in 2006: 'The Prophet' Pinot Noir. The Dixons Creek site - producing chardonnay, sauvignon blanc, pinot noir, cabernet sauvignon, merlot and shiraz - was purchased by the family in 2006 and has undergone extensive re-planting and development to become the home of Mandala Wines.
Mandala is led by owner and managing director, Charles Smedley, who has over 26 years experience in the wine industry, including extensive experience across Australia, Europe and Asia. Charles also oversees the winemaking team, motivated by his passion for the industry and his dream of producing the elusive 'perfect' wine. He considers it a privilege to live and work in the Yarra Valley, and continues to grow and develop Mandala Wines both nationally and overseas.
