Timo Mayer, also winemaker at Gembrook Hill Vineyard, teamed with partner Rhonda Ferguson to establish Mayer on the slopes of Mt Toolebewong, 8km south of Healesville. The steepness of those slopes is presumably ‘celebrated' in the name given to the vineyard (Bloody Hill). Pinot noir has the lion's share of the high-density vineyard, with smaller amounts of shiraz and chardonnay. Mayer's winemaking credo is minimal interference and handling, and no filtration. The Empire of Dirt wines are a collaboration between son Rivar Ferguson- Mayer and UK importer Ben Henshaw. Exports to the UK, France, Germany, Denmark, Sweden, Singapore and Japan.
