Yering Station

Victoria | Yarra Valley

James' Review

The historic Yering Station (or at least the portion of the property on which the cellar door sales and vineyard are established) was purchased by the Rathbone family in 1996 and is also the site of the Yarrabank joint venture with French Champagne house Devaux (see separate entry). A spectacular and very large winery was built, handling the Yarrabank sparkling and the Yering Station table wines, immediately becoming one of the focal points of the Yarra Valley, particularly as the historic Chateau Yering, where luxury accommodation and fine dining are available, is next door. Willy Lunn, a graduate of Adelaide University, has more than 25 years' cool climate winemaking experience around the world, including at Petaluma, Shaw + Smith and Argyle Winery (Oregon). Exports to all major markets.

About

In 1838, the Scottish-born Ryrie brothers ventured into the Yarra Valley. They named their property ‘Yering’, its Aboriginal name, and planted Victoria’s first vineyard on the site. In the early 1850’s Swiss migrant Paul de Castella took ownership of Yering Station, developing the property into a landmark of winemaking in Victoria. De Castella extended the vineyards and cultivated varieties with cuttings imported from France. A winery (now home to our cellar door), house and garden were constructed and an avenue of 330 elms was planted along the driveway. Reaching early heights in 1889, Yering Station won a Grand Prix at the Universal Exhibition in Paris, the sole award for wine made in the southern hemisphere. Today, Yering Station remains a family-owned winery, purchased by the Rathbone family in 1996. The importance of our proud heritage is still a visible feature of the property today. Historical icons such as the original avenue of elms, the heritage-listed barn and early winery building, now home to our cellar door are reminders of the achievements of the past. Located in the ‘heart’ of the Yarra Valley only one hour’s drive from Melbourne and planted with our key varieties, chardonnay, pinot noir and shiraz, Yering Station remains true to its heritage as a family owned and operated winery dedicated to producing wines of quality and distinction. With decades of cool climate winemaking experience both in Australia and overseas, winemaker Willy Lunn has developed a passion for regionality and making wines that are always the truest expression of place. A specialist in crafting ultra premium wines focusing on varietals such as pinot noir and chardonnay, his attention to detail and focus on quality over many years has forged the “no compromise for quality” philosophy that continues to guide him today. As Chief Winemaker, Willy’s commitment to encouraging a strong team spirit throughout the winery allows the passionate and progressive team at Yering Station to thrive.
