While the estate vineyards have a diverse range of sauvignon blanc, semillon, chardonnay, pinot noir, merlot, shiraz, cabernet franc and cabernet sauvignon, founder Bill Wignall was one of the early movers with pinot noir, producing wines that, by the standards of their time, were well in front of anything else coming out of WA (and up with the then limited amounts being made in Victoria and Tasmania). The establishment of an onsite winery and the assumption of the winemaking role by son Rob, with significant input from Michael Perkins, saw the quality and range of wines increase. Exports to Denmark, Japan, Singapore and China.
Wignalls is one of Western Australias most Southerly situated vineyards, based on the outskirts of the City of Albany. Specializing in Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir with production around 10000 cases per annum.
The climate is best described as Maritime with mild and wet winters and mild summer tempretures with cool nights. All vineyards are orientated North / South with free draining soils, a mix of Vertical and Lyre trellising and non irrigated. Harvest starts in early March through to mid April for heavy reds and most variaties are hand picked to retain exceptional quality.
