Howard Park

Western Australia | Margaret River

James' Review

Over the last 30 years the Burch family has slowly acquired vineyards in Margaret River and Great Southern. The Margaret River vineyards range from Leston in Wilyabrup, to Allingham in southern Karridale; Great Southern includes Mount Barrow and Abercrombie (the latter acquired in 2014), with Houghton cabernet clones, planted in 1975, all in Mount Barker. At the top of the portfolio are the Howard Park Abercrombie Cabernet Sauvignon and the Allingham Chardonnay, followed by the Rieslings, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc; next come pairs of Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon under the Leston and Scotsdale labels. The Miamup and the Flint Rock regional ranges were established in '12. MadFish produces the full range of varietal wines, Gold Turtle the second tier of MadFish. The feng shui-designed cellar door is a must see. A founding member of Australian First Families of Wines. Exports to all major markets.

Howard Park, run by Burch Family Wines, is one of Western Australia's premier, family-owned wineries has been prolific within its 30 year history, encompassing two generations, two wine regions & four vineyards. Helmed by Jeff and Amy Burch, Howard Park adheres to a philosophy of continual improvement, excellence and innovation. This drive is evident in the culture of the winery and vineyard where the teams focus on the things that interest them, & control processes in-house; from creating method traditionelle sparkling, establishing a rootling nursey, building custom vineyard machinery, or labouring over a botanical mix for an experimental vermouth. As one of Western Australia’s leading family-owned wineries, Howard Park is a specialist in the foremost grape-growing regions of the state - Margaret River and Great Southern. Over time the viticultural team has built up an intimate, textbook-like knowledge of vineyards across the regions, leading to carefully selected acquisition and development of four vineyards. The Margaret River vineyards, Leston & Allingham, are named after Jeff’s father and grandmother, and make up the cornerstone of Howard Park’s chardonnay and cabernet sauvignon production. In the wild and isolated Great Southern the vast Mount Barrow vineyard was designed from virgin soil with plantings of a diverse selection of chardonnay and pinot noir clones from Burgundy & our own nursery. The Abercrombie vineyard is one of the very oldest in the Great Southern, planted with Houghton clone cabernet in 1974. Each vineyard is diligently managed and viewed as individual sites and blocks, with a heavy organic & biodynamic focus, but without the conformity of certification. Howard Park wines have been some of the most collected in Australia, with the flagship ‘Abercrombie’ Cabernet Sauvignon, ‘Allingham’ Chardonnay & Rieslings all widely regarded as benchmarks for their region & variety. The introduction of the ‘Distinguished Sites’ & ‘Regional’ ranges have highlighted the distinctive terroir characteristics of Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay & Shiraz from Margaret River & the Great Southern. Over the years numerous family members have worked in the company with Amy and Jeff’s children, Natalie, David & Richard, all taking up in key roles within the business.
