Our Review
One-time schoolteacher, potter and winemaker Erl Happ is the patriarch of a 3-generation family. More than anything, Erl has been a creator and experimenter: building the self-designed winery from mudbrick, concrete form and timber; and making the first crusher. In '94 he planted a new 30ha vineyard at Karridale to no less than 28 varieties, including some of the earliest plantings of tempranillo in Australia. The Three Hills label is made from varieties grown at this vineyard. Erl passed on his love of pottery to his son Myles, and Happs Pottery now has 4 potters, including Myles. Exports to the US, Denmark, the Netherlands, Malaysia, the Philippines, Vietnam, Hong Kong and Japan. -JAMES HALLIDAY
