Higher Plane was purchased by Roger Hill and Gillian Anderson, owners of Juniper Estate, in 2006. The brand was retained with the intention of maintaining the unique and special aspects of site in the south of Margaret River distinct from those of Wilyabrup in the north. The close-planted vineyard is sustainably farmed using organic principles. Sons Nick and Tom (formerly a winemaker in the Yarra Valley), are now running the business. Chardonnay, sauvignon blanc and cabernet sauvignon are the major plantings, the focus now shifting to fiano, syrah and malbec.
The Higher Plane property is located in the Forest Grove locality of the Margaret River wine region, 15km south of the Margaret River. It was established in 1997 and has ideal exposure and gravelly duplex soils. The varieties planted were carefully selected clones and closely-planted to produce low yields and increase fruit intensity. Management of the vineyards is sympathetic to preserving the pristine nature of this unspoiled environment by utilising natural practices wherever possible.
