Chief executive Charmaine Saw explains, ‘My life has been a journey towards Umamu. An upbringing in both eastern and western cultures, graduating in natural science, training as a chef combined with a passion for the arts and experience as a management consultant have all contributed to my building the business creatively yet professionally.' The palindrome ‘Umamu', says Charmaine, is inspired by balance and contentment. In practical terms this means an organic approach to viticulture and a deep respect for the terroir. The plantings, dating back to 1978, include cabernet sauvignon, chardonnay, shiraz, semillon, sauvignon blanc, merlot and cabernet franc. Exports to Canada, Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines, Singapore and Hong Kong.

UMAMU Estate is produced from our family vineyard in Margaret River with vines first planted in 1978. We place a strong emphasis on allowing our vineyard to express itself naturally while striving to achieve balance in the ecosystem. We work with what each different season presents us and provide the best environment for each vine to produce balanced fruit for our desired wine styles. We produce the classic blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon, Chardonnay, Cabernet Merlot and Shiraz as well as a fine Sparkling Chardonnay. Our newest release is a Cabernet Sauvignon.
