Woody Nook, with a backdrop of 18ha of majestic marri and jarrah forest, doesn’t have the high profile of the biggest names in Margaret River but it has had major success in wine shows over the years. It was founded by Jeff and Wynn Gallagher in 1978 and purchased by Peter and Jane Bailey in 2000, with Jeff and Wynn's son Neil involved in the vineyards and winery until very recently. Major renovations by the Bailey family transformed Woody Nook with a new winery, a gallery tasting room for larger groups and an alfresco dining area by the pond. Exports to the UK, China, Singapore and Malaysia.
Founded in 1982, Woody Nook now has 37 acres of vines nestled in the Wilyabrup locality of the Margaret River region. Woody Nook is a boutique winery, producing only 7,500 cases annually. It is family-owned and run, unpretentious and small, but proud of the critical acclaim winemaker and viticulturist Neil Gallagher consistently receives. In the past decade his wines have won more than 250 awards, including 5 Trophies, 30+ Gold medals and 40+ Silver Medals.
Red grape varietals planted on the vineyard include; Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Merlot, Tempranillo and Graciano. The white grape varietals are Chardonnay, Semillon, Sauvignon Blanc, and Chenin Blanc. The range of wines produced by Woody Nook is headed by the flagship, “Gallagher’s Choice” Cabernet Sauvignon a wine that has had great show success over the years, highlighted by the 2007 vintage winning the Warren Winiarski Trophy for the best Cabernet Sauvignon at the International Wine and Spirit Competition in London in 2009.
Set against a backdrop of majestic marri and jarrah forest, the cellar door and giftshop building is rustic and quaint, with an attractive adjoining gallery tasting room for larger groups. The Nookery Café has cosy indoor seating as well as a shady courtyard and an all weather alfresco patio by the pond. Tasty, wholesome lunches are served daily as well as morning and afternoon coffees and teas.
