Garth Cliff was winemaker at Houghtons in the Swan Valley for 10 years prior to starting Vino Volta with his partner Kristen McGann in January 2019. Vino Volta largely (although not exclusively) focuses on chenin blanc (they make four, pushing the grape in 4 different directions) and grenache from the Valley. Chenin blanc is in a revival phase currently, much of it thanks to Cliff, culminating in the inaugural nationwide Chenin Blanc Challenge in 2020, held in the Swan Valley. Together they have also started their own wine import portfolio called Wine Terroirists, calling on McGann’s long experience in the trade. Cliff is an active (in every sense) member of the Swan Valley Winemakers Association and a tireless proponent for the region. Exports to Singapore. (EL)
Swan Valley and Swan District is 185+ years old in grape/wine producing is a bit of an underdog wine region with lots of old vines. It can produce brilliant wines especially in the case of Chenin Blanc and Grenache which have proven well suited to our climate. Vine age contribute to moderated yields and a coming of age in the flavour and quality of these sites. Vino Volta is part of a new wave of producers that is changing things, focusing on quality, focusing on what the region is best at, and building on this with new varieties as well.
