Alkina was born in 2015 when Argentinian vintner, Alejandro Bulgheroni purchased his Greenock property with its 1950s-planted vineyard.
The front 40ha of the farm has been NASAA certified organic and biodynamic since 2018. The organically farmed back block, formerly the Owens vineyard, was added in 2017 and will be certified in 2022. In 2017, the addition of terroir expert, Pedro Parra, to the team led to the Polygon mapping project; a deep dive into what makes the unique terroir of the property tick; cellar techniques are tweaked to enhance soil-to-glass transparency. Think traditional western Barossa grape varieties with wild yeasts, some with a little skin contact, whole-bunch ferments, concrete eggs and fermenters, Italian clay amphorae, Georgian qvevri and older large-format oak and you’re on the right track.
