Head Wines is the venture of Alex Head, who came into the wine industry in 1997 with a degree in biochemistry from Sydney University. Experience in fine wine stores, importers and an auction house was followed by vintage work at wineries he admired: Tyrrell's, Torbreck, Laughing Jack and Cirillo Estate. The names of the wines reflect his fascination with Cote-Rotie in the Northern Rhone Valley. The two facing slopes in Cote-Rotie are known as Cote Blonde and Cote Brune. Head's Blonde comes from an east-facing slope in the Stone Well area, while The Brunette comes from a very low-yielding vineyard in the Moppa area. In each case, open fermentation (with whole bunches) and basket pressing precedes maturation in French oak. Exports to the UK, the US, Denmark, The Netherlands, Singapore and China.
HEAD Wines was started in 2006 by Alex Head. It focuses on single site Rhone varietals from the Barossa and Eden Valleys in South Australia. The ‘House Style’ is one of elegance, freshness, balance and purity of fruit attained by slow-winemaking and careful, gentle attention during maturation. HEAD Wines quickly achieved a Halliday 5 Red Star Rating, Top 10 New Wineries and numerous Top 100 Wines. All vineyards are farmed sustainably and use organic principles where possible. Yields are low/controlled and grapes are hand-picked. The ferments use indigenous yeasts with some retention of stems. Minimal sulphur is used during the whole wine-making process and bottling is without fining or filtration where possible.
