The friendship of the Lanz and Thomson families stretches back 30 years, although it was the two (future) wives who first became friends through Rotary International in the 1970s. In their words ?Brian and Thomas came on the scene over the next few years, sharing stories and bottles of wine?. One thing led to another, and in 1998 they began the establishment of the 15ha Outlook Vineyard and the 16.5ha Moolanda Vineyard, each planted predominantly to shiraz, each with around 2ha of mourvedre and viognier, splitting only with grenache (1.44ha) on Outlook and cabernet (3.25ha) on Moolanda. The lion?s share of the grapes is sold.
LanzThomson stands for family owned, estate grown, quality wines. The Vineyards are situated on a high exposed ridge in the southwestern Barossa Valley. To the east, the stunning view is framed by the adjacent hills of Eden Valley whilst to the west can be seen the cold waters of Spencer Gulf. This tough country boasts unique terroirs: ancient low yielding soils characterized by shattered shale and limestone based rock, hence the name "Shattered Rock". These free draining soils, the site elevation and frequent spring and summer winds contribute to fruit of the highest quality.
Our viticultural philosphy is to nurture the vines, avoiding stress and optimizing fruit quality. This, with minimal winemaking intervention, creates wines which faithfully express the vineyards’ terroir.
Four wines are produced and sold under the Shattered Rock range - Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Four Friends (a blend of Grenache, Shiraz, Mouvèdre and Viognier) and the white speciality Viognier. All wines are sold in Australia and exported to Switzerland, Skandinavia and Canada. More markets to come.
