Our Review
Three days before Christmas 2015, Casella Family Brands received an early present when it purchased Brand’s Laira from McWilliam’s. Over the years McWilliam’s had moved from 50% to 100% ownership of Brand’s and thereafter it purchased an additional 100ha of vineyards (taking Brand’s to its present 278ha) and had expanded both the size, and the quality, of the winery. Exports to select markets. -JAMES HALLIDAY
About
Brand’s Laira is an iconic winery, nestled in the heart of the famed ‘Terra Rossa’ strip of South Australia’s Coonawarra region.
It was in 1893 that an English sea captain named Captain Henry Stentiford, purchased a block of land right in the heart of Coonawarra and named the estate ‘Laira’ after his beloved ship. The name ‘Brand’s Laira’ was introduced some 50 years later in 1950, when Eric Brand (a baker by trade) and his wife Nancy Redman acquired the same 4 hectare property with just over 2 hectares of Shiraz.
Today, the Brand family continue to keep a watchful eye over Brand’s Laira with Eric’s grandson Trent leading the viticultural team, working alongside Peter Weinberg, Chief Winemaker, now in his 18th vintage.
Steeped in heritage with a wealth of old vineyards dating back to 1893, Brand’s Laira offers a range of elegant yet richly flavoured premium wines from this distinct region.
