The only surprising piece of background is that it took (an admittedly still reasonably youthful) Stephen (Steve) Pannell (and wife Fiona) so long to cut the painter from Constellation/Hardys and establish their own winemaking and consulting business. Steve radiates intensity, and extended experience has resulted in wines of the highest quality right from the first vintage. The Pannells have two vineyards in McLaren Vale, the first planted in 1891 with a precious 3.6ha of shiraz. A second property was purchased in 2014,lifting the estate vineyards to a total of 22ha. The future for the Pannells is limitless, the icon status of the label already established. Exports to the UK.
S.C. Pannell Wines is a relatively young company, with it's first wines released from the 2004 vintage. Already the winery has received a 5 red star rating by James Halliday, who says “This is a label well on it's way to icon status” in his Australian Wine Companion 2013. Halliday was certainly proved right in 2014, when Stephen Pannell took out the Jimmy Watson Memorial Trophy for his 2013 Adelaide Hills Syrah. This is the second time Stephen has won this award. This is of little surprise given Stephen’s extensive knowledge and experience gained from his work with many of Australia’s best wineries and numerous vintages overseas at such places as Domaine des Comtes Lafon in Burgundy, Chateaux Mouton Rothschild in Bordeaux and G.D. Vajra in Barolo. Other highlights in his career include winning the title of International Red Winemaker of the Year at the International Wine Challenge in London, twice winning the Max Schubert Trophy at the Adelaide Wine Show, as well as being listed as one of the ‘50 most influential contributors to the world of wine’ by DECANTER Magazine. Stephen was crowned 2011 Bushing King at the McLaren Wine Show for his ongoing focus on Mediterranean styles. The winning wine a 2010 Tempranillo Touriga blend, influencing a new direction for the region. This was followed by two further Bushing King wins, with the 2014 Grenache Shiraz Touriga in 2015, and in 2016, with his 2015 Touriga Cabernet Mataro. At the Australian Alternative Varieties Wine Show, Stephen has won Best Wine in Show, four years in a row with his Tempranillo Touriga and Nebbiolo varieties. Along with this award he has won many more at the show including Best Red Wine, Best Blend and Best Spanish Variety.
